I need your help in the movement to cure arthritis
I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2003. I was 33 years old. What a shock! RA affects all joints in the body, causing inflammation characterized by redness, warmth, swelling and pain within the joint. RA affects roughly 1% of the U.S. population and the exact cause is unknown. Since I was diagnosed, my RA has progressed to the point where I am giving myself weekly injections of medication besides the oral medications I take. It has been a very long journey; one beginning with denial going all the way to acceptance.
I have had to modify everything in my life, from the type of car I drive to dressing, cooking, and shopping. I used to love driving cars with manual transmissions but my arthritis has taken that away. I love to shop. My family and I used to go to the mall and walk around all day, just for fun. Now, to do something like this, or go to the zoo, I would have to use a mobility scooter. It is difficult to find enjoyment in the things I used to love.
This month, June 2009, I decided that I wanted to be more active and fit so I have set the goal of walking in the Arthritis Walk in August. I have begun what I consider training, walking everyday and building up my stamina. I didn't realize what a difference this exercising would make. My symptoms are decreasing daily as I begin to get fit and build my stamina. I can once again do my grocery shopping walking with a regular cart.
I am taking on the challenge to make a difference in our community by participating in the Arthritis Walk as a part of Let's Move Together, the Arthritis Foundation's nationwide movement that encourages people to move to prevent or treat arthritis.
Today, one in five people suffer from the pain of arthritis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) project that by the year 2030, 67 million people in the U.S., or 1 in 4 adults, will live with arthritis. You can join me in the movement against arthritis by helping me reach my goal. Let's Move Together to improve lives and reduce the pain of arthritis.
